A sustainable Production of the West Side Story
Platform Members, Roadshow
One of the standout figures behind the production was scenographer Aleksandra Ana Buković, whose innovative and sustainable approach to stage design left a lasting impression. Already recognised as a rising talent in Croatian theatre, Buković co-signed the scenography for West Side Story, earning praise for both her conceptual depth and commitment to environmental responsibility. Constructed entirely from recycled materials and repurposed elements from previous productions, her set design exemplified how creativity and sustainability go hand in hand. Buković's collaborative spirit also shone through, as she involved a team of young scenographers-in-training from the Academy of Applied Arts in Rijeka, passing on not only technical knowledge but also a vision for a more responsible future in theatre-making.
The tradition of the continuous theatre life in the city of Rijeka is more than two centuries long. The first theatre building was completed in 1765, however, as it also served other purposes, the construction of a new theatre was initialized at the end of the 18th century.
